Capacity Building

One of the main objectives of Sustaining our Towns was to support the development of people across the region working in a voluntary or professional capacity in the field of sustainability.  This page provides details of the training we offered.

Training for Transition

Sustaining our Towns will run a ‘Training for Transition’ course in conjunction with Transition Towns South East and The Crossing Land Education Centre in Bermagui on 9-11 March 2012.

The course is for people looking for sustainable solutions and who recognise the environmental, social and economic benefits that occur when communities work together to reach common goals.  On completing the course participants will:

  • have a clear understanding of the context for transition towns, and the transformational possibilities that arise from the twin challenges of climate change and peak oil
  •  know what the TT model is – including an in depth look at the key 12 steps, from inspiration, setting up the initiating group, all the way to having active and effective working groups and have experienced a joint visioning process
  • understand how to organise effective meetings such as public talks, open space days and small theme working groups
  • understand the purpose and principles of an Energy Descent Plan
  • have formed useful contacts with other Transition initiatives
  • have an initial plan of action for themselves and their locality

Sustaining our Towns will cover all course costs  for up to 24 attendees.  This will include all training, activities, food and accommodation at The Crossing education centre.   Download the Training for Transition course flier.  To RSVP for the course please contact John Barlow on 0413 880207 or .

Certificate IV in Carbon Management

Sustaining our Towns is hosting the running of a Certificate IV in Carbon Management in Queanbeyan during October and November 2011.  The Certificate IV is an accredited workplace qualification for managers and supervisors to enable and support the development of carbon management and carbon emission reduction strategies for enterprises. This para-professional qualification is designed for candidates at the supervisor, manager and executive level.  Certificate IV graduates develop skills and competencies that enable them to understand the strategic implications of carbon emissions for business and how emissions reduction strategies can be implemented using business planning frameworks, supported by existing business systems.

The Queanbeyan course being hosted by Sustaining our Towns is now fully subscribed, but you could contact Project Manager Tracey Rich on  if you are interested in case places become available before it runs.  Alternatively, check the Carbon Training International website for other courses that may be running in Sydney or elsewhere in the future.
